Ever found yourself caught up in a conflict that, in hindsight, wasn't worth your energy? I know I have ... We all have. In those moments, it is important to remember that every situation presents us with a choice—not just about what to say or do, but t what battles we choose to engage in.

We tend to fight because we listen to the voice in our head that tell us we are right, there is only one right way and it normally is ours.

This is not necessarily being stubborn, as people might call us, or as we may call others who do not agree with us. This is simply being a human being and having our views shaped by our own experiences.

After all, we can't understand how someone could interchange bowls with vowels unless Spanish is their first language, or how similar X and Y sound to an English native.

Our experiences of the world shape the way we react and interpret everything around us. It is not what happens; it is what we decide it means.

Looking at how different our options are allows us to go deeper and ask ourselves if we really want to get into an argument with someone. Sometimes, we will decide that it is absolutely necessary, and in some cases, we might be able to breathe and choose to step back.

By choosing to step back, you saved not only your energy but also preserved valuable relationships. This choice isn't about giving up but choosing where to focus our energy effectively. Sometimes, the best choice is to conserve our energy for the battles that truly matter.

At the end of the day, there are nonnegotiables; those are the ones you want to save your energy, those are the ones no matter what, and those are worth fighting for.
